Moving to Cornwall? We did and we love it. Follow our Cornish journey here. >>

Moving house is daunting.

Not only do you have to deal with psychological issues but there are practical things to think about too!

For newbies and even experienced movers, the whole process can be appear like an overwhelming jungle of things to do. Hopefully this short list of pre-move ideas will help.

1. Put your house on the market!

Sounds obvious but no one likes an offer on their house from someone who hasn’t got a genuine one on their own. It’s a waste of time for all concerned!

2. Research the internet.

Be proactive and search the web. It’s full of useful information about places, property and prices. Join local discussion forums and ask for local peoples’ opinions.

3. Contact local estate agents.

Phone them, email them, visit their websites and get on their mailing lists. Be sure to keep phoning them too as properties come and go before they even hit the window display!

4. Get hold of local news and property papers.

Local news and property papers are a useful resource for local information and properties for sale. If possible, order them and have them sent to your present address.

5. Visit the places you’d like to move to.

Again it sounds obvious but the sooner you get looking in person the sooner you’ll get a feel for the place. You never know but the village next door might be a much better place for you to live!

6. Put ads in the local post office and other shop windows.

More and more people are happy to buy and sell property without using an estate agent.

7. View places and properties in the depths of winter.

The summer might be lovely but what’s it like when it’s foggy and raining in the middle of winter? If you like it when it’s grey and wet it should be fine throughout the rest of the year!

8. In tourist ‘hot-spots’ view property in the summer holidays.

If you like your privacy and the thought of 1000s of tourists walking past your living room window doesn’t thrill you, viewing a house mid holiday season is a good idea!

9. Stay overnight in the area you’d like to move to.

By staying in a local B&B you’ll get a real feel for noise levels at different times throughout the day. Traffic noise, people staggering back from the pub and even children playing after school, can really change how you feel about a place.

10. Talk to local people.

Visit local pubs, restaurants, shops and cafes and talk to local people about what it’s like to live there. Some will give you all the insider information!
