Moving to Cornwall (an in-comers view)

Cornblogger - blogging about Cornwall

Letters to Cornblogger

Moving to Cornwall? We did and we love it. Follow our Cornish journey here. >>

We absolutely love Cornwall.

We both have been holidaying in Cornwall since we were small children. My Husband has some relatives down in Cornwall (Redruth) and we visit as often as we can throughout the year. We both have jobs in the West Midlands, I work within the food manufacturing industry and my Husband works as an animal keeper.

We are considering moving to Cornwall within the next 5 years to start our family down there and search for a long term home for us and our expanding zoo of animals! At present, I am trying to do as much research as possible and gather all the facts needed before making the final decision.

My parents are due to retire within the next five years and they are also keen to move to Cornwall for their retirement but are bit apprehensive about agreeing to such a huge move.

I have read your tips and advice on your blog and they are very helpful, but I just wondered have you got any advice for our situation and do you think we should go for it? If there is any information or guidance you could give to moving I would really appreciate it.

Many thanks

Kind regards (name withheld)

Thanks for getting in touch.

Moving anywhere is or can be, a huge challenge both physically and mentally. Moving a long way from home can put a real strain on relationships and so I feel it's really important to have worked things out between you and your husband and your families before you take the plunge.

If everyone is okay with the idea and you've done your research then there is no reason why it shouldn't be a wonderful, life changing experience. If everyone else thinks you're crackers then be prepared for some people to get upset - it happened to us so we know!

For you and your husband, finding sustainable work will be the main issue to deal with and obviously important if you start a family down here. Cornwall can be very seasonal re. work so if possible it's worth sorting this out before you move.

Re. your parents, I'm not sure of their support groups (family/friends) where they live but moving away from that, at retirement, can be a real issue. They should think carefully before they upsticks from all they know and consider carefully the type of place they might want to live.

It's never an easy decision but you'll never know unless you try.

I hope this helps.

Best of luck

Chris
